Toyota Introduces Aqua Hybrid Battery Technology

The new Toyota Aqua, a hybrid car made by the Japanese automaker, was released in 2007. It is powered by a Bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery known for its efficiency. The Aqua was one of the first vehicles with this type of battery. Since its introduction, it has received many positive reviews from automobile enthusiasts and critics alike.

Bipolar nickel-hydrogen batteries

Toyota Motor Corporation is introducing the world’s first vehicle with a high-output bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery. This new generation of technology is set to give the all-new Aqua more power, responsiveness, and a more comprehensive range. It also offers a host of comfort features and environmental performance.

The Aqua, unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show in early 2013, has a 1.5-liter petrol engine and a 3-cylinder hybrid drivetrain. These features, combined with the new bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery, are expected to double the car’s output.

The new bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery pack is less bulky, lighter, and more compact than its predecessor. It also allows for a 1.4 times increase in the number of cells in the same space. A lower internal resistance can generate higher currents, resulting in more power.

The new Aqua’s bipolar nickel-hydrogen battery pack enables it to run at higher speeds and achieve smooth, linear acceleration. In addition, it can operate on battery power alone in urban scenarios. A unique feature known as Comfort Pedal allows drivers to slow down the car while generating regenerative braking force smoothly.

Toyota is working on a new generation of lithium-ion batteries that will reduce the cost of per-vehicle batteries by 50% by 2030. Among other improvements, the batteries will be cobalt free and have advanced structures.

Toyota has worked on several improvements to the hybrid battery pack to make it more compact and practical. These improvements include reducing weight, increasing the number of cells, and doubling the total output.

Aside from the increased output, the new Aqua also uses a novel design to increase the battery’s capacity. Each module is 20mm comprehensive. This makes the battery pack fit 1.4 times more cells in the same space.

The Toyota Aqua is available in three grades. Each grade is based on a different battery capacity.
